We are sad to announce the passing of Ann Elizabeth Munro Walmsley (nee Hewson), aged 91, who passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, at Kingston General Hospital. Ann slipped away peacefully with her family by her side.

Ann was predeceased by her husband, Douglas (BA’57, LLM‘60); and beloved son, Ian (BA‘87). She is survived by her brother, James Hewson; her devoted son, Chris (Sc’91, MSc‘98); and his wife, Linda; and her two cherished grandchildren, Drew and Benjamin. Ann took great pride in her family.

Ann was born and raised in the small town of Thornbury. After high school she found a job at Sick Kids in Toronto as a x-ray technician before heading to university in Kingston. She graduated from �ʹ�����’s with an Arts degree in 1957 and was a proud alumna. It was at �ʹ�����’s where she met her future husband, Doug. Immediately following graduation, she took a job at the Chalk River Nuclear facility. Later returning to Kingston, she worked at a DND Lab on the base while living in the small annex to what is now the revitalized Frontenac Club.

Ann and Doug married in 1963 and settled in Toronto, where Ann worked as a research scientist for the Government of Ontario Virology Lab. In 1965 they moved to Picton when Doug joined the family law practice. After starting their family, they eventually moved into Heatherbrae, their home on Main Street for many years, of which Ann was so proud. While raising her family in Picton, Ann devoted herself to numerous creative and entrepreneurial endeavors, notably organizing and running the first Bed & Breakfast network in Picton.  

With her sons at �ʹ�����’s, Ann returned to Toronto to take care of her ailing mother in the family home. After that time, Ann remained in Toronto and maintained an active and social life there until moving to Kingston in recent years to be closer to her family. 

Ann was a gracious, intelligent, and independent woman. She stayed engaged with current affairs, and reading the G&M was a daily ritual. She enjoyed travelling and experiencing the different cultures of the places she visited. Most importantly, Ann treasured time with her family, friends, and the heritage that shaped her. Her timeless style and genteel manner will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Ann will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her legacy of love and grace will endure in the hearts of those who loved her. 

Albert Carl Streith, “Squeegy” – Carl to his family, Squeegy to his �ʹ�����’s comrades and Al to his Bell Canada colleagues – passed away peacefully with his wife and family at his side on Dec. 9, 2024, as the sun rose at London University Hospital.

Beloved wife of Jessie for a wonderful 63 years; devoted father to Hallie and Frank, Peter and Karin, and Paul and Jana; doting and loving grandfather to Seth and Rilinda; Diandra and Jordan; Griffin, Lucas and David; David and Sam; Laura and Chris; Emily and Olivia. Carl’s two great grandsons, Eli Lynton and Leo Carl, brought him such genuine joy. Nothing was more important to Carl than his family. He was a pillar of strength for all those he called family and could always be counted on to guide or assist anyone in need. He taught the importance of being someone you could count on in all aspects of life. 

Carl was a kind and thoughtful man, a devoted family man, a great teacher and an even greater friend. Carl attended �ʹ�����’s and graduated in 1963 with a degree in electrical engineering. He spoke lovingly about his time; his lifelong friends, PeeWee, Tank and Pump. He shared stories of the grease poll and other engineering traditions with the biggest smile on his face. 

He went on to have a lifelong career at Bell Canada and, after retiring, Carl built a beautiful home on the lake for family and friends, who were always welcome. We all have many wonderful memories of times with Carl and Jessie at “the cottage.” Every summer the grandchildren would come up to get spoiled rotten. 

He loved cats, and they loved him. Whenever there was a new kitten in the family, we would have to frisk Carl before he left, as he notoriously had that kitten quietly tucked away in his shirt as he was trying to make his escape. We were all so blessed to have had Carl in our lives!

In loving memory of Patricia Jane Scott, who passed away in Cobourg, Ont., on Jan. 17, 2025, at the age of 72, with her husband and children at her side. 

Pat was born to George Lloyd Stevenson and Dorothy Edith Grant on March 11, 1952, in Ottawa. The daughter of a chartered accountant and an occupational therapist, Pat led a quintessentially Canadian childhood. 

Patsy, as she was known in her early days, spent summers at the family cottage on Hurds Lake canoeing and enjoying the outdoors, while winters were spent at their ski cabin near Camp Fortune. In Ottawa, Hurds Lake and at the cabin, she was always surrounded by many loving relatives and family friends.

Pat attended �ʹ�����’s and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Occupational Therapy in 1974. Pat’s career as an occupational therapist spanned over 40 years across both Canada and the U.S. Pat was dedicated to her patients, spending many evenings working to request charity funding to improve their quality of life. Pat retired in 2015.

It was also at �ʹ�����’s where Pat met the love of her life, Iain Wesley Scott. Pat and Iain were married at Grant Hall on Sept. 29, 1979. Iain lovingly played the foil to Pat’s more traditional and conservative temperament with jokes and playfulness, a successful recipe that led to an enduring and steadfast relationship of over 52 years and marriage of over 45 years. Pat and Iain, who were best friends and soulmates, had their daughter (Courtney) in 1983 and son (Cameron) in 1985.

Pat was described by many who knew her as vibrant and full of life. Always on the go, Pat loved to visit Toronto every week for lectures at a local university, sharing what she’d learned with her family. Her keen sense of style and design was renowned – friends wondered what colourful new pair of glasses she’d be wearing next to complement her striking white hair; her garden was featured on home design tours; and she designed a wedding dress for her daughter.  Above all, Pat was devoted to her family, providing steadfast support for her husband, children and granddaughter, Evelyn.

Pat is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Iain; son, Cameron; daughter, Courtney; granddaughter, Evelyn Farlinger; sister, Sue Pennal; nieces, Steph and Merel and brother-in-law, Rick Scott. 

With heavy hearts, we share the news of Michael’s passing after a brief battle with cancer. Michael passed on Oct. 9, the day of his 53rd wedding anniversary to the late Anne Rosemary (Rommie), whom he adored and missed immensely. 

Michael was the cherished father of Chris, Julie, and Ted Osborne (Heather); beloved grandpa of Julianne Rosemary (Cullen); son of the late Philip and Lily Nihmey; brother to George and Nick; and was predeceased by brothers, Elias and John. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews, godchildren, students, and friends.

Michael was a lifelong athlete. He played football at both Carleton University, where he completed his undergraduate, and �ʹ�����’s, where he attended Teacher’s College and proudly won the 1968 Vanier Cup. He also played hockey for many years and continued to play baseball until the age of 78. 

During his brilliant teaching career, he taught at several Ottawa high schools, including Highland Park, Commerce, Ottawa Technical, and Immaculata (as vice principal), touching the lives of countless students and staff alike. Michael ended his career at St. Patrick’s High School, where he helped to bring back and coach his favourite sport, football. He was passionate about teaching and always wanted the best for his students. He always enjoyed running into former students and hearing about their lives. He prided himself on remembering them by name even many years later. 

Loved by so many, Michael was a stand-up guy, a funny, warm, and wonderful person, and the most amazing, supportive father, who would do anything for his children. He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

With boundless gratitude to the Almighty God and acceptance of his will, the Nabutete family announce the departure of Margaret Ann Nabutete (nee Mason), which occurred on June 10, 2020, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a missionary couple, the late Pastor Arthur and Lilian Mason. Margaret, a registered nurse with a Bachelor's in Nursing Education from �ʹ�����’s and a Masters of Public Administration in Hospital and Health Management (1974, New York University), worked as an instructor at St. John's Hospital School of Nursing (Newfoundland); was an instructor of Foreign Nursing Students at Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City, N.Y.); head of Nursing at Mohawk College (Hamilton); chairperson of Health Sciences Department at Sault College (Sault Ste. Marie); and an instrumental music teacher and founder of Staccato Recorders Orchestra, in Nairobi. 

Until her death, Margaret was happily married to Frank H. Nabutete, her �ʹ�����'s sweetheart, with whom she had five children: Eric, Edmund, Elias, Lilian and adopted son Calvin. She touched many lives and positively impacted the communities she became a part of around the Globe. 

David Douglas McLean, PhD, PEng, FCIC, passed away peacefully on Jan. 21, 2025, at the Granite Ridge Community in Stittsville, Ontario.

The eldest of four children, David was born in Belleville, Ont., to Douglas Stewart McLean and Bernice (Bunny) McLean (née Button). David attended Moira Secondary School, where he excelled in academics and athletics. A letterman, he represented the school on the basketball team and competed at the provincial level in track and field. David enjoyed playing hockey with his father and brothers Rick and Don. He was a motivated and industrious child, saving his earnings to purchase Fudgsicles on Fridays from the school cafeteria.

As a student in high school and university, he worked at the Belleville Entomology Lab and Corby's Distillery in Corbyville, Ont. He pursued higher education at �ʹ�����'s, where he earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering. 

David began his professional career as manager of quality control at Lynn Macleod Metallurgy Steel Foundry in Thetford Mines, Que.

In 1977, David was asked to join the University of Ottawa's Department of Chemical Engineering, as a professor. Over a distinguished career, he served in various leadership roles as department chair, director of Graduate Studies, director of Co-op, vice-dean of Engineering, and dean of Engineering. David carried out collaborative research, teaching and consulting with numerous companies and governmental organizations, including NORTEL, INCO, SPAR, SHELL, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, CANMET and the Canadian Conservation Institute. David's dedication to the profession extended beyond academia; he was a leader of The Corporation of the Seven Wardens, presenting new Canadian engineers with their iron rings, and in 2000 he was appointed a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.

David presented popular public science lectures aimed at engaging youth and starred as the host of children's television science programming for TVO Kids.

David's love for sports endured throughout his life. He coached his sons' T-Ball, softball and basketball teams to numerous successes, inspiring them to successful coaching roles as adults. A lifelong football fan, David held an unwavering allegiance to the Minnesota Vikings, which began when he first watched Fran Tarkenton play. He also enjoyed hockey, cheering for the Chicago Blackhawks, before proudly embracing the Ottawa Senators, much to the disapproval of his wife, Ann Merry, herself a lifelong Leafs fan. Despite his own sons' best efforts, he remained the superior hockey player in the family.

Music was another of David's lifelong passions. He earned advanced qualifications in organ and piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music and spent his youth subbing as an organist across the Anglican Diocese of Ontario to fund his education. David sang in church choirs from the age of eight, and as an adult sang with multiple cathedral choirs with whom he toured Canada, the U.S. and England.

An avid outdoorsman, David held a hunting licence and loved camping and canoeing. His love of nature was evident from a young age, when he enjoyed making open fire maple syrup and trapping rabbits outside Belleville. He met his wife, Ann, at Camp Hyanto in Lyndhurst, Ont., where she was the waterfront director and he was the sports director. Together, they travelled across Canada in a two-person tent, exploring the country from coast to coast.

David is loved, missed and remembered by his wife, Ann Merry, with whom he celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 23, 2024; his siblings, Richard (Helen), Donald (Patti) and Elizabeth (Graham); his children, John (Robin), Rob (Milo) and Jaime (Michelle); and his grandchildren, Charlotte and James.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Mattinson on Jan. 8, at the age of 76. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. John embodied the values of a true public servant, dedicating much of his life to the community of Orillia, Ont., and contributing greatly to it over the years.

John was born in Orillia on July 9, 1948, at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, where he would later serve as a board member and a member of its foundation. John was a proud graduate of �ʹ�����’s, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering, with honours, in 1973. His career was spent in the electrical power generation and distribution sector. His career saw him develop his skills from coast-to-coast across Canada. He would eventually return home to serve the former Orillia Power Corporation, where he would end his career as its president and secretary.

As a member of the local Rotary Club, John was heavily involved in charitable work and local initiatives. Among his most cherished contributions, John was a key member of the team who took care of the miniature Rotary Club train at Couchiching Park and was involved in maintaining, upgrading and operating the local attraction for many years.

John also regularly attended official homecomings for his graduation year.  He did, however, miss his 50th, as his health was so poor.  

John is survived by his wife, Lorraine Bergeron; his children, Céleste (Shanice) and Marcus (Brooklyn); and his nephews, James (Pauline) and Daniel (Jean).

While he is now gone, John’s legacy stands as one of unwavering commitment to his family and local community, both of which he loved dearly until his last breath. He will be sorely missed.

It was his wish to have some of his brain tissue donated to science in hopes that research on the sample, might help find a cure for Parkinson’s

Randy died suddenly on Sept. 24, 2020, in La Quinta, California. He is survived by his wife, Joan (aka Jo) nee Steven (Artsci’77); their son, Darren; and his wife, Heather; and son, Andrew (Andy).

Jo returned to Canada from California in 2024 and is living in Vancouver.

Linda passed away on Dec. 23, 2024, from glioblastoma cancer. She is survived by her husband, Greg (MBA’74), and her children, Jim and David (Com’12) (Meghan Moore, Com’13).

Linda and her husband were the original donors for the Venture Management Program at the School of Business. She loved the �ʹ�����’s family and organized her MBA reunions for over 40 years. 

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peter Campbell, who left us on Jan. 30, shortly after being diagnosed with ALS and experiencing a rapid decline. Peter is survived by his wife, Barbara Campbell (née Kelly); his children, Kimberley, Andrew (Kyoko), Owen (Stephanie); his brothers, Douglas and Robert; and sister, Elspeth; his grandchildren, Amelia, Kian and Veronika; along with several nephews, nieces and extended family. 

Born on May 4, 1943, Peter was not just a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle, he was a trailblazer in his scientific field. He graduated from �ʹ�����’s in ‘68 with his PhD in chemistry. An internationally renowned pioneer in biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology of metals in aquatic environments, Peter made a lasting impact through his research and mentorship. He guided many PhD and MSc students, was a prolific author, served as a consultant and collaborated with a wide range of scientists sharing similar interests around the globe. His expertise was highly sought after by government agencies, international mining companies and Indigenous communities in Quebec. 

As a professor at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Université du Québec), INRS ETE, his contributions to science were recognized when he was nominated to the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002 and received the Founders Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in 2019 – the highest distinction awarded to an individual for their outstanding contribution to environmental sciences. 

Beyond his impressive professional accomplishments, Peter was an avid athlete (tennis, golf, basketball and an enthusiastic walker among others), always with a touch of competitive spirit! He instilled his values in his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to travel and to be curious about the world around them. 

Known for his kindness, integrity and compassion, Peter had a brilliant mind and a kind soul that touched many lives. He also possessed a disarming sense of humour, often playfully honking at fellow drivers of the same car model. 

A little-known fact about Peter is that he was a “grammarian” of sorts (just like his mother), always attentive to the nuances of language and communication. His discipline and organization were apparent in all that he did, and his legacy will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His life mattered, inspired and elevated those around him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Kenneth Robert “Ken” Battle died on Nov. 18, 2024 after a long illness. He was born in Calgary on July 29, 1947, the son of Robert and Lois (née Morrison) Battle. He grew up in Calgary and Edmonton before moving with his family as a teenager to Ottawa, where he attended Bell High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts at �ʹ�����’s, then was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship, which took him to Nuffield College, Oxford, for an MPhil. He later recalled the influence of his studies in sociology there as having given him a pragmatic approach to goals of social justice. Perhaps this is why he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps, joining the civil service in Ottawa rather than pursuing an academic career. 

He spent several years with the National Council of Welfare, eventually becoming the Council’s director. In 1992, Ken was invited to co-found a social policy think tank by fellow �ʹ�����’s alumnus Alan Broadbent, chair of Maytree, a non-profit dedicated to finding and advancing solutions to poverty in Canada. 

Ken became president of the Caledon Institute of Social Policy, a position he held until 2017, when the Institute’s operations were wound down. During those 25 years, Caledon’s research and writing focussed on practical ways that public policy could lift people out of poverty. 

In 2000, Ken was named Member of the Order of Canada. He received the award, according to the citation, in recognition of his “significant role in the area of Canadian welfare legislation, including the development of the National Child Benefit Program.” The citation concludes: “His contributions have helped to forge and to shape Canadian social policy.” Since then, the Child Benefit Program and its successors have been credited with lifting hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. 

After a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia in 2019, Ken moved from his Kanata home to a retirement residence, where he bravely faced the loss of his health with patience, generosity, and good humour. He continued to demonstrate his commitment to social justice in his personal life. In spite of his declining health, he never failed to express appreciation for the people whose work made his life pleasant and to show concern for their well-being. He remained the sociologist observing and analyzing human behaviour in the society around him. 

Ken is survived by his beloved daughter, Erin (Sc’19) (Austin, Texas); his brother, Murray, (Montreal); his sister Ellen (Victoria); and his nephews, Tyler and Curtis. Married three times, he was predeceased by Laurie McIntyre; and is survived by former wives, Ruth Jamieson (Arts’70) and Melanie Hess. He will be fondly remembered by his many former colleagues and collaborators as well as by the friends with whom he shared canoe trips, cross-country skiing, and foreign travels over the years. Broadbent has written that Ken “wanted to have influence that would improve people’s lives, particularly those without sufficient resources to live with dignity.” Thousands of families, without knowing his name, can attest that he was successful.
