Online Workshop: Anti-Oppression in the Workplace
1:30 PM – 3:30 PM
Find on Campus Map
Equity seeking groups in Canada have long experienced various forms of oppression. Some oppressions, like physical brutality, may be direct and easily observable. Others are less easy to detect but nevertheless have a great impact on a person's feelings of dignity, welcome and value. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to define oppression as it relates to equity seeking groups in Canada, identify various forms of oppression and the ways in which they are sustained by institutional, political, economic, cultural and other power structures. Participants will also be able to identify everyday ways in which non-target group members experience advantages as a result of continued oppressions, and develop strategies for ongoing reflection on, and practice of, anti-oppression in the workplace. These strategies can be applied in service delivery, and in our interpersonal relationships in the workplace and beyond.
Learning Outcomes:
- Recognize both direct and indirect forms of oppression that equity seeking groups experience in Canadian workplaces
- Describe how forms of oppression are sustained by institutions, as well as various political, economic and cultural structures
- Recognize how dominant groups experience advantages at the expense of oppressed groups
- Develop strategies to reflect on and practice anti-oppression in the workplace
