Now more than ever, leading healthcare quality and safety scholars recognize the need to expand our vision of safety so that it reflects the perspectives of the patient, carer and family. Healthcare providers, educators, administrators, and researchers can learn from the narratives of patients and their families.
The keynote speaker for the inaugural »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s Healthcare Quality Research Forum, Ms. Margaret Murphy, "sees patients and patient families as a seriously under-used resource". Ms. Murphy speaks from experience. Her son died as a result of medical error. "Adverse events happen to real people," Margaret says. "Kevin was more than a statistic; he was more than a medical condition. He was a real person, a young man, full of life. But above all, he was my beautiful boy."
Ms. Murphy has been a tireless advocate for safety improvements worldwide in her role as the External Lead Advisor, World Health Organization - Patients for Patient Safety, a network of over 500 patient safety "champions" from 52 countries and 19 collaborating organizations.
