Samantha Nicholls

About

Sam is a first year Ph.D. student working under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Pasolli. Sam holds a BA (Honours) from »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s University in History (2021), and an MA in Public History from Carleton University (2023). Her passion for youth and curriculum led to extensive research and a call toward a revitalization of the Ontario curriculum to include locally based and museum-focused histories as a means of engaging youth with their local heritagescapes. This research is highlight in her Master’s Research essay ‘Doing the Local’: Public Histories, Curriculum, and Games-Based Learning in Kingston, Ontario, (2023). Sam’s research at »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s University will highlight her interest in women’s history, examining notions of prescriptive motherhood through the lenses of gender, race, and class in the late 20th Century.  

Professionally, Sam has worked as a Historical Researcher specializing in genealogical research for large-scale community projects. She has also worked in several museums local to Kingston in programming, research and interpretive planning roles. Her interest in education and curriculum was demonstrated through her work as an Occasional Teacher in Ottawa. Sam has contributed to several projects including Active History’s digital exhibit (2024), and the Carleton University Art Gallery’s exhibit (2022).

As a proud daughter of a CAF Veteran, Sam also works closely with Veteran communities to co-create mental health resources for Veteran Families, specifically youth. She has shared her life experiences on projects such as Mindkit.ca and for years has worked closely with the as part of their Strategic Planning Committee and Family Cadre; reaching toward the betterment of resources for Veterans and their Families across Canada.
