My name is Leslie and I am a first year MA student. I completed my BA in history with minors in English and Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) at Carleton University. I am excited to be continuing my studies under the supervision of Dr. Nancy van Deusen this fall. Thematically, my research focuses on the history of animals, as well as the intersections between the institutionalization of medical practice, the proselytization of indigenous peoples, and the reception of local animal remedies. More specifically, I aim to explore how the reception of New World materia medica was shaped by deep-rooted ecclesiastical suspicion of the relationship of indigenous peoples with natural materials. Outside of my research, I enjoy baking, swing dance, and crafts such as bookbinding.
