Gaels snap 31-game skid against McGill

MEN’S HOCKEY

The No. 8 »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý's Gaels (11-4-3) defeated the No. 5 McGill Redmen (11-3-1) 4-0 on Saturday in a battle of two of the best teams in the nation. With the win, »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý's moves into a tie with both McGill and UQTR for first place in the OUA East.

It was a historic night for the Gaels as they were able to snap a 31-game losing streak against McGill that dates back all the way to Feb. 6, 2004.

Slater Doggett scored a pair of goals while Ryan Bloom and Spencer Abraham also got on the board. Jacob Brennan made 27 saves for the shutout.

On Friday, the Gaels fell 6-3 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Memorial Centre. Bloom, Cody Genovese and Warren Steele scored for »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Playing in their last game of the 2016 portion of their OUA schedule the »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s Gaels (5-1-6-0) were able to escape Toronto (5-1-5-0) with a 3-1 victory over the Varsity Blues.

Megan Farrell opened the scoring a minute into the game while Kaylie Dennis made it 2-0 with the first of her OUA career. Nadia Larocca added an empty-netter to round out the scoring. Stephanie Pascal made 30 saves in the win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Marianne Alarie tallied a game-high 22 points, and the No. 6-ranked »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s Gaels women’s basketball team earned its fifth-straight victory to begin the regular season, topping the Lakehead Thunderwolves 68-61.

Alarie shot 9-of-20 from the field, and drained two three-pointers in 30 minutes of court-time for the Gaels. Abby Dixon picked up 14 points and a team-high four steals, while Andrea Priamo recorded 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý's Gaels men’s volleyball team (5-4) had a rough weekend with a pair of losses. On Sunday they travelled to North Bay, where they were defeated by the Nipissing Lakers (5-1) in straight sets 25-17, 25-18, and 25-19. Zac Hutcheson had 11 kills and six digs to lead the way for the Gaels.

The Gaels were defeated 3-1 by the York Lions (4-2) on Saturday, falling in four sets 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, and 25-23. Hutcheson had a game-high 12 digs for »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý's in addition to contributing 10 kills. Markus Trence had a team-high 19 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý's Gaels women’s volleyball team (3-6) lost both of their matches on the weekend in five sets.

On Saturday they were defeated by the York Lions (4-3) 25-11, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-12. Caroline Livingston led the Gaels with 16 kills and 17 digs, while Isabell Korchinski contributed 12 kills and 15 digs.

On Sunday Gaels (3-6) lost to the Nipissing Lakers (4-3) 25-18, 25-15, 13-25, 22-25 and 15-12. Caroline Livingston had a team-high 13 kills, followed by 11 for Danielle Corrigan and 10 kills for Victoria Wensley.
