Priority countries in South Asia region include Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The region also includes Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal.

 »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s aims to develop virtual and other approaches to partnership in locations where travel is challenging.  

 »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s is currently not developing formal relationships with universities in Afghanistan. »Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s has partnered with World University Services of Canada and Scholars at Risk to host students and scholars from Afghanistan as part of the Principal’s Global Scholars and Fellows program.

This includes partnership development, agreements and contracts, connecting to regional networks and funding sources, and coordinating incoming diplomatic delegations or university wide visits.

Regional Networks for Global Engagement

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) builds knowledge and understanding between Canada and India by sponsoring academic activities in a rich diversity of disciplines.

  • Promotes academic linkages between 154 Indian and 40 Canadian universities. 
  • Supports all disciplines and all levels of higher education from undergraduate to post-doctoral fellowship.
  • Maintains offices in Delhi and Calgary, funded by the governments of Canada and India.

IC-IMPACTS is the only Research Centre of Excellence dedicated to the development of scientific collaborations between Canada and India.

  • Brings together researchers, industry leaders, community members and government agencies to develop and implement community-based solutions.
  • Priorities include (1) integrated water management, (2) safe and sustainable infrastructure, (3) public health, and (4) food security. 
  • As of 2023, IC-Impacts has funded 74 projects with 383 partners.

Regional Funding Opportunities

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓý’s is a member of the ACU, the oldest international network of universities (400+ members across 40 commonwealth countries).

Opportunities for Staff and Faculty

  • facilitate learning, collaboration, and new partnerships – offering academics and professional staff up to 5000 GBP towards research visits up to six months at ACU member universities.
  • enable universities to develop research, train staff, and build connections.
  • Many of these opportunities look favourably on collaborative proposals , including those in South Asia.

Opportunities for Students

  • : hosted in a different country each year, the ACU provides funding for students from every corner of the Commonwealth to discuss multidisciplinary issues of global importance.

CFLI provides funding for small-scale, high-impact projects in developing countries, which align with Global Affairs Canada’s thematic priority areas for engagement.

Opportunity Summary

  • The CFLI program is directed at projects conceived and designed predominantly by local partners.
  • Projects are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian embassy or high commission.
  • The average CFLI contribution is $40,000 Canadian Dollars ($100,000 CAD maximum).
  • Annual calls are launched for all countries in the South Asia region, other than Afghanistan.

IC-IMPACTS is a pan-Canadian and pan-Indian Research Centre bringing together researchers, industry leaders, community members and government agencies to develop and implement community-based solutions to the most urgent needs of each nation.

Opportunity Summary

  • Calls for research proposals vary, but can offer successful faculty upwards of $25,000 CAD.
